Actually, the scholarship rules are....
1) With other power-5 conferences, the ACC and VT have committed to 4-year guaranteed athletic scholarships. See the “Hokies Pylons of Promise” This means you can't cut a scholarship player for not meeting your play expectations. There are a few ways to transfer the scholarship to the university (medical) but for the most part, you have to run the kid off "voluntarily" or cut for discipline issues/rules violations (drinking).

2) while the NCAA is relaxing transfer rules, current scholarship players cannot transfer without either going JUCO or year in residency first - see the update link below. https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/ncaaf/2018/10/05/ncaa-looking-at-more-changes-to-transfer-rules/38063937/
3) Szefc's is quickly becoming known as a coach you don't want to play for. 1) when he was first announced he eliminated all of Mason's commits immediately, 2) stocked up on JUCO 3) recruited more players than he could possibly roster 4) slashed and burned players - his recruits.
4) word in travel ball is to stay away from Blacksburg. Head out to one of these tourney's and talk to to=he kids https://www.perfectgame.org/Schedule/Default.aspx?Type=Tournaments
